Privacy Policy
Written in plain language. No jargon. No gotchas.
The short version
- We collect no personal data from children, none, ever.
- We don't sell your data. We don't share it with advertisers.
- We use two third-party services: Stripe (payments) and Upstash (data storage).
- You can request deletion of your data at any time.
1. Who we are
KidsPlaylist ("we," "us," "our") operates the KidsPlaylist Progressive Web App and marketing website at kidsplaylist.com. KidsPlaylist is a simple playlist layer on top of YouTube for parents to curate what their children watch.
If you have questions about this policy, email us at privacy@kidsplaylist.com.
2. What we collect
We collect the minimum information necessary to provide the KidsPlaylist service:
- Family codeA randomly generated identifier that represents your account. This is pseudonymous: it doesn't contain or reveal any personal information about you.
- Email addressOptional but recommended, used only for account recovery (e.g., to send your family code if you forget it) and transactional notices (e.g., trial ending reminder, payment receipt).
- Approved playlistThe list of YouTube video URLs you've added to your family's playlist. These are stored so they can sync across your devices.
- Payment informationHandled entirely by Stripe. We receive a Stripe customer ID and subscription status. We never see or store your raw credit card number, CVV, or other payment card details.
3. What we do not collect, especially from children
KidsPlaylist's child-facing interface is a video player. It has play, pause, and volume controls. It has no registration forms, no login screens, and no input fields of any kind for children. As a result, we do not and cannot collect:
- Children's names
- Children's ages or dates of birth
- Viewing history or watch time data from children
- Behavioural or preference data from children
- Device identifiers or fingerprints from children
- Location data from any user
- Cookies used for advertising or cross-site tracking
- Any information from children under 13 (or any age)
We also do not collect analytics data about adult users' browsing behaviour, install analytics trackers on our marketing site, or use any form of behavioural advertising.
4. How we use your data
We use the data we collect for these purposes only:
- Providing the service: Storing and syncing your approved playlist across devices.
- Account management: Allowing you to sign in with your family code, recover your code via email, and manage your subscription.
- Payment processing: Billing your subscription through Stripe.
- Service communications: Sending essential transactional emails (trial reminders, payment receipts, service updates). We do not send marketing emails unless you explicitly opt in.
- Legal compliance: Complying with applicable laws and regulations.
We do not use your data to build advertising profiles, sell to third parties, train AI models, or any other purpose not listed above.
5. Third-party services
KidsPlaylist uses exactly two third-party services:
Stripe
We use Stripe to process subscription payments. When you subscribe, you enter your payment details directly on Stripe's secure form. KidsPlaylist receives only a Stripe customer ID and subscription status. Stripe stores and processes your payment information subject to Stripe's own privacy policy. Stripe never receives or interacts with child data.
Upstash
We use Upstash (a serverless Redis and data platform) to store family codes and approved video playlists. Data stored in Upstash includes: your family code, your optional email address (hashed), and the list of YouTube URLs in your playlist. No child data is stored in Upstash. Upstash data is stored in secure, encrypted data centres subject to Upstash's privacy policy.
We do not use Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, Hotjar, Intercom, Mixpanel, or any other analytics, advertising, or customer engagement platforms.
6. YouTube and Google
KidsPlaylist embeds YouTube videos using YouTube's IFrame API. When a video plays, a connection is made to YouTube's servers. YouTube and Google may set cookies or collect data about the video playback session subject to Google's Privacy Policy.
We use YouTube's privacy-enhanced embedding mode (youtube-nocookie.com) where possible to minimise data collection by YouTube during playback. However, we cannot fully control what data YouTube's player collects, and parents should be aware that embedding YouTube content involves YouTube's infrastructure.
7. Data retention
We retain your account data (family code, email if provided, playlist) for as long as you maintain an active subscription, plus 30 days after cancellation to allow for reactivation. After 30 days of inactivity post-cancellation, your account data is permanently deleted from our systems.
Payment records are retained for as long as legally required (typically 7 years) to comply with financial regulations. These records are held by Stripe, not by KidsPlaylist directly.
8. Your rights
Depending on your location, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data:
- Access: Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
- Correction: Request correction of inaccurate data.
- Deletion: Request deletion of your account and associated data.
- Portability: Request a machine-readable export of your data.
- Objection: Object to certain types of data processing.
To exercise any of these rights, email privacy@kidsplaylist.com. We aim to respond within 30 days.
9. Children's privacy (COPPA)
KidsPlaylist is designed specifically so that children are not data subjects. Children never interact with any KidsPlaylist interface that could collect personal information. We do not knowingly collect any personal information from children under 13 (or under any age, for that matter).
If you believe we have inadvertently collected information about a child, please contact us immediately at privacy@kidsplaylist.com and we will delete it promptly.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. When we make significant changes, we'll notify you by email (if you've provided one) and update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of KidsPlaylist after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
